The Systems Integration Corporation/MODCOMP T88xx mass storage subsystems for MODCOMP computers shipped Archive 2150S QIC tape drives, which have a fixed record size of 512 bytes. However, original MODCOMP tape subsystems implement variable-length records, and most software depends on that. The T88 implements a proprietery format that stores the original records and their lengths to synthesize variable-record-length tape drive behavior using its fixed-record-length drive.

This program converts between variable length records and the T88's internal representation format, but using .tap format tape image files. This facilitates direct write of a .tap file to a tape which can then be used in a T88.
